Back in the early days we thought it would be simple to hop in Ruby and head east or west with a loose plan of a route and hopefully landing back in the UK a few years later, but we soon found out it wasn't going to be as simple as that.
Initially our plans were to head east through Europe, crossing into Asia via Istanbul and onto Iran, Pakistan, India, South East Asia, New Zealand or Australia, South America and finally back to the UK. We always knew that we would have to ship Ruby at certain points which is another post in itself. We learned about lots of other things we had to consider like the infamous Carnet de Passages, visa's, country status etc.
No problem, we thought, other people have done this therefore so can we! We knew a challenge would be the route through Pakistan into India for fairly obvious reasons and finally came up with a list of alternative options;
After a few hours of discussions that weekend and talking to numerous people (if anyone is looking for some travel inspiration you won't go wrong reading Emma and Andy's adventures) we made the decision to change our direction and go west! This was also influenced by speaking to the wonderful staff of Hurtigruten who were at the Adventure Travel Show and we found the Antarctic trip we wanted to book.
Going west to somewhere in South America means shipping Ruby from the UK and she will be landing in Cartagena on the Caribbean coast of Colombia at some point next spring. We then have a good few months to meander through South America with our only deadline being in Buenos Aires, Argentina by December 2016 to pick up a flight to take us to Ushuaia to begin our Antarctica expedition.
