We previously had a Howling Moon roof tent. Whilst we loved it-we decided after our month in Morocco that it still took a little too much time to put down and always involved Gav getting on the roof to pack it down and zip up. We sold it and bought a Maggiolina from Autohome. The type we bought was a medium Grand tour and it is brilliant! It takes less than a minute to put up and less than 5 to put down. We store our duvet and pillows inside it.
We have a Howling Moon awning which we would recommend. We also have the 3 side walls and back walls-although we have not used them much. |
Security and safety were always at the top of our list from the start and we had decided that we wanted a secure area for all of our stuff and after looking at countless other peoples setup's we decided this would be the very rear of the landy. We've achieved this with a load guard to only allow access through the rear door which also has a security hasp that allows us to padlock the door as well as the door lock.
The windows are also tinted to prevent prying eyes and are secured with Mantec window guards on the side windows and Mobile storage systems window guards on the rear door and quarter lights.

We were so impressed with the door hasps we had them fitted to all of the doors along with a number of waterproof padlocks.
Neither of us are hugely experienced when it comes to driving off road but the reality is that we won't be driving up and down perfectly laid lanes of tarmac and the standard of other vehicles and driving in other countries around the world will be variable, so the decision to get a full internal/external Safety Devices roll cage fitted wasn't difficult.

Our spare wheel is mounted on a rear door wheel carrier. This rear wheel carrier is suitable for all Land Rover Defender models built with the pre 2002 rear door. Attaching to the chassis of the vehicle as well as pivoting above using the re-enforcing plates supplied this wheel carrier is certain not to affect the body work or rear hinges of your vehicle. A third point of contact attaches to the door enabling the rear door to be opened without having to swing the wheel carrier out of the way first, this makes it possible to open the rear door from inside the vehicle.Supplied with all the necessary fixings and instructions this wheel carrier is fitted with grease nipples at the hinges, powder coated black and can be galvanised on request. It also incorporates a stand with bracket allowing the mounting of a Jack.
We had a work lamp fitted above the rear door mainly for when we are setting up on an evening and gives of loads of great light making life a lot easier than relying just on torches.

We also have a pair of tubular side steps with a chequer plate top to help with getting in and out of Ruby as well as acting a little bit like rock sliders providing some protection.
Tyres are very important and there is a huge choice when it comes to 4x4 tyres.
We wanted something that would be fairly quiet on tarmac roads and give good mileage but equally as capable off road when it mattered. Everyone will have their own preferences in terms of manufacturers etc. and after many discussions with Bob we went for the BF Goodrich all terrain tyre. |
When we the major parts of our work done by Footloose we upgraded our headlights to halogen bulbs and added a pair of lightforce lights.
This was to provide the maximum light in those dark and distant places of the world we will be visiting to make sure that anything that is on the road the same time as we are know we are there and more importantly we know they are there.
